Kevin Smith Jokes About 'Too Wide' Airplane Incident On 'The Mindy Project'

Mindy found herself seated next to a celebrity when Kevin Smith dropped by "The Mindy Project." The actor/director proved he can poke fun at himself by playing himself in an airplane scene. Back in 2010, there was a lot of media buzz about Southwest Airlines reportedly kicking Smith off of a flight because he was "too wide for the sky."

His quick cameo in the opening moments of "Mindy" was a big call-back to that incident. Mindy had an aisle seat, hoping that the man of her dreams would sit next to her in the middle seat. Instead, it was Kevin Smith who slipped in. "I’m alway so worried they’re gonna stick me next to someone skinny," he said. "Then I gotta put up with their skinny stink-eye the whole flight.”

“I’m sorry, sir. I am a petite Asian woman," Mindy insisted.

“So am I," Smith laughed. "Look, all I’m saying, you and me, chubs like us? We gotta stick together in the sky.”

“How dare you!”

Luckily, things didn't escalate as the seat's actual occupant, played by "Mad Men" actor Ben Feldman, showed up to save the day -- and become her latest love interest. But it was Smith's cameo that seemed the most memorable. Even Mindy Kaling herself tweeted that she loved having him on, calling him "funny and adorable."

The AV Club's Katherine Miller got a kick out of Smith's appearance, calling the short-but-sweet cameo hilarious. Over at TV Fanatic, Chris O'Hara was also a fan, but thought it was just too short. In other words, somebody needs to book Kevin Smith a second flight to "The Mindy Project" right away.

Laugh along with "The Mindy Project" every Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
