Nate Berkus Shares His Rules For Shopping For Decor Abroad (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Nate's Number One Rule For Shopping Abroad

We're anxiously awaiting Nate Berkus' One Kings Lane sale this Friday. But to hold us over, Elle Decor sat down with the designer to find to what exactly we should be doing and looking for when shopping for home decor abroad.

Berkus' number one tip: Stay away from tourist traps. Berkus suggests ditching typical markets and heading for some underground spots instead. "Ask where the antiques shops or dealers are -- if you're open and adventurous, these tips will bring you to the best places," he said. "In Peru, our bus driver was the one to tell us about the local market in Cusco, where we discovered so many great things."

Another one of his rules is to always ask two important questions: Who made this? And how was this made? "After working for an auction house, knowing if something is authentic is one of my strong suits," Berkus said. "Anything with synthetics is a no -- that generally speaks to it being made in a factory. Same for things with a sewn-in label."

Thanks, Nate!

Berkus' One Kings Lane sale beings 11 AM EST on Friday. Be sure to head over to Elle Decor to hear more from the designer.
