Dani Shapiro Tells Oprah About The Questions That Sparked Her Spiritual Journey (VIDEO)

The Questions That Sparked Dani Shapiro's Spiritual Journey

Bestselling author Dani Shapiro is sitting down with Oprah to discuss some of life's biggest questions on "Super Soul Sunday." Shapiro, who grew up the daughter of an Orthodox Jewish father and an atheist mother, says the deceptively simple questions from her young son sent her on a spiritual quest: “What happens when we die?” and "What do you believe?"

"Those questions set off an avalanche of feelings and thoughts," Shapiro says in the above video.

Initially, she gave her son what she calls "the smorgasbord answer."

"It was, 'Well, some people believe that there's a heaven. Some people believe that we come back. Some people believe in the spirit world,'" Shapiro says.

"And I knew that I was failing him," she says. "I knew that I was failing myself, too, because … a 6-, 7-year-old kid, they don't want a smorgasbord. They want to know what their mom believes."

Shapiro realized she didn't know what she truly believed. It led her on a path of self-discovery, and today, Shapiro says she has found a deeper, fuller, more joyful life. To learn more about her journey and the answers she ultimately found, watch "Super Soul Sunday" on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.
