Officers Fatally Shoot Knife-Wieding Man Who Stabbed Chicago Cop In The Face

Chicago police fatally shot a knife-wielding man inside a South Side home in Roseland Tuesday night after the man reportedly stabbed a sergeant in the face several times.

The 46-year-old officer suffered puncture wounds and lacerations to the face, the Tribune reports. He was taken to an area hospital in serious condition though authorities said his wounds were not life-threatening.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute in the 200 block of West 107th Street around 10:30 p.m. and found a man armed with two butcher knives when they arrived, according to CBS Chicago.

The Sun-Times reports the man stabbed the sergeant -- the first official to enter the home -- before locking himself inside the house. Police said they feared the man was trying to blow up the house, noting a strong smell of natural gas coming from inside.

After breaking windows to ventilate the home and forcing their way inside, ABC Chicago said police found the man hiding in a furnace room closet, still armed. When the man refused to drop his weapons and reportedly lunged at officers, police shot and killed him.

“They’re putting their lives on the line every night, and they basically saved this woman’s life, in addition to neighbors, if the guy was intending to blow up the house,” a police spokesman said.

The offender was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's mother, who was also inside the home at the time of the incident, was taken to a separate area hospital to be treated for cuts.

The department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the incident.
