Original 'Return Of The Jedi' Trailer Surfaces With A Different Title

Posted: Updated:

You might notice a few surprises in the original teaser for Episode VI of the "Star Wars" saga. First, the episode number isn't mentioned anywhere -- those weren't part of the series' promotional material at the time. More interesting: the title used in the trailer is not "Return of the Jedi," but rather "Revenge of the Jedi."

The clip was added to the "Star Wars" YouTube page, which has now rolled out each of the original three teasers. This one is much more reliable than the previous two. The first "Star Wars" trailer seemed confused about the film's identity, going so far as to shed the famous "In a galaxy far, far away" in favor of "Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now," which obviously changes everything. The "Empire Strikes Back" promo offered only conceptual artwork instead of clips.

Things settled down with "Revenge of the Jedi" "Return of the Jedi," though, which features a semi-solid plot description and actual clips from the movie. The original title may have been a result of the script's first draft, which didn't end with the sympathetic portrayal of Darth Vader for which the film is now known. Using "return" is more reflective of the final movie's tone, and thank goodness George Lucas changed it, because he was able to employ the title for 2005's "Revenge of the Sith." Praise be.
