GOP Alabama Congressional Hopeful: Obama Was Born In Kenya

GOP Congressional Hopeful Claims Obama Was Born In Kenya

Birtherism is apparently alive and kicking in Alabama.

Dean Young, one of the runoff contenders for the Republican nomination in Alabama's first congressional district, told The Guardian that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

In an interview published Wednesday, the newspaper asked Young and his opponent, Bradley Byrne, a series of questions. On the list: where was Obama was born?

Byrne, for his part, told the Guardian "he was born in Hawaii and he has produced a birth certificate." Young tried to brush off the question, telling the newspaper "That is what we call the $64,000 question! I have no idea!" After he was pressed for an answer, though, Young said he believes the president was born in Kenya.

The White House released Obama's long form birth certificate in April 2011, in an attempt to lay to rest conspiracy theories claiming the president is not a natural born citizen. Still, not everyone is convinced. In August, rocker Ted Nugent alleged that the birth certificate was "phony" and implied that Obama is secretly Muslim. North Carolina state Rep. Larry Pittman (R) also joked last week that Obama can't be called a traitor because he hasn't done anything to hurt Kenya.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that Nugent is a rocker, not a country singer.
