Called "Little Miss Mozart" by some, 8-year-old Alma Deutscher wants no part of a nickname that many might find flattering. "I want to be Alma, not Mozart," the composer told the "Today" show on Sunday.
Alma, from England, is guesting on American talk shows to promote her new CD, "The Music of Alma Deutscher."
After listening to her perform her music on the piano in the "Today" segment above, you'll have to admit the kid puts the "pro" in prodigy. She tickles the ivories with such joy and grace that it's almost hard to believe she also played the violin with similar verve on "Ellen" last week.
While most of us hear music, Deutscher can actually "think music," her music teacher, Tobias Cramm, told The Wall Street Journal.
Inspiration for her art doesn't materialize from sessions tearing out her hair as she sits at her desk. Sometimes it comes when she's playing with her jump rope, and sometimes it comes while she sleeps. She told "Ellen" host Ellen DeGeneres that she once dreamed of a Mozart piece but woke up to realize that it was her own creation.
