Sometimes they make it so easy. Actually, if you watch "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report," they always make it easy. But on the latest episode of "The Simpsons," the long-running animated series proved that it could take pointed jabs at the cable news networks as well. While it was a short bit, it was still a fun poke at the current state of cable news -- they even took a swipe at print media.
The plot saw local news anchor Kent Brockman heading to New York to consider a position at Fox News. When he arrived, he got a look at the competition. Fox News had a news crawl on their building reading, "Dinosaurs died from over-
taxation." The MSNBC building had a huge billboard on its side reading, "Fox Started It!." And then there's poor, lowly CNN. Looking like an abandoned single-screen movie theater, its marquee read, "Will Tr de News for Food."
Uncertain, Kent turned to a news vendor to see how the New York Times was doing. The vendor told him he was The New York Times. Ultimately, Kent decided that he much preferred the local news in Springfield. If those are his alternatives, it's easy to see why.
"The Simpsons" proves it can still take a satirical bite from time to time, Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
