'The Simpsons' Offers A Tribute To Marcia Wallace With A Touching Chalkboard Message

"The Simpsons" had a very sweet tribute to actress Marcia Wallace during its opening credits. The classic chalkboard sequence had Bart Simpsons writing one sentence -- and it wasn't repeated. "We'll really miss you Mrs. K," he'd written. Wallace was the voice behind Bart's teacher, Edna Krabappel.

Wallace, who was also known as receptionist Carol Kester on "The Bob Newhart Show," passed away last week at the age of 70 of complications from pneumonia.

"The Simpsons" executive producer announced that Wallace's character would be retired following her passing. "Earlier we had discussed a potential storyline in which a character passed away. This was not Marcia's Edna Krabappel," he said. "Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.”

As Wallace had completed her voice work for most of the current season before her death, her character will continue to be featured in the show. She will be retired later this season, or early in the show's 26th season.

"The Simpsons" airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
