Bradley Byrne won the Republican runoff in Alabama's 1st congressional district, defeating tea party-backed candidate Dean Young in Tuesday's election.

The Associated Press called the election for Byrne on Tuesday evening.

A recall was triggered after no candidate in the September primary was on pace to receive at least 50 percent of the vote. Byrne and Young topped the field of nine candidates in the Republican race and moved on to the runoff.

Byrne will face Democrat Burton LeFlore in the December general election to replace former Rep. Jo Bonner (R-Ala.), who resigned from office earlier this year.
