Jesse Winchester Clocks Chris Kelly With Elbow During Bruins-Panthers Game (VIDEO)

WATCH: NHL Forward Leaps Into Dirty Hit

Panthers forward Jesse Winchester earned himself a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Thursday when he delivered an illegal hit to Boston's Chris Kelly just five minutes into the game.

Kelly attempted to play the puck out from the corner after the Panthers flooded Boston's zone on the forecheck early in the first period. That's when Winchester left his feet and executed a leaping elbow right to the side of Kelly's jaw.

Surprisingly, no penalty was called on the play. But Boston forward Gregory Campbell took matters into his own hands by dropping the gloves on his next shift.

Kelly left for the locker room after the blow but returned to the game and managed to log an assist in the third period.

Both Kelly and Winchester were teammates for three seasons with the Ottawa Senators. According to Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy, a lengthy suspension is not expected.
