On Friday afternoon, The New School hosted a riveting conversation with bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) and Melissa Harris-Perry on race, black womanhood, politics, media, and love.
What transpired was an exchange of pure brilliance, raw honesty, and smart analysis around a topic not discussed often enough — the plight and experiences of black women. And in light of the recent controversy surrounding the death of Renisha McBride, this video is right on time.
Colorlines led the charge, live tweeting the chat.
Here are a few highlights:
"The distance is growing between black females and black males." - @bellhooks #nerdland http://t.co/EQDqjTTKBj

bell hooks says black women don't have control over how we're perceived: angry, strident, difficult etc. #nerdland #bellhooksTNS

"I consider myself a black feminist," this mother says, "but sometimes it's so hard to get out of the bed&face other black people" #nerdland

Melissa: We have no tropes around Black female victimization. We don't know what to do with that.

.@MHarrisPerry: "It's not really about being a single parent; the thing you're supposed to be ashamed of is being poor." #nerdland

"Shame produces trauma. Trauma produces paralysis." - @bellhooks #nerdland

Watch the video above for the full conversation. Its an hour and half long, but worth the time!
