Joe Scarborough was very blunt about the direction the Republican party has been headed on "Meet the Press" Sunday morning. The MSNBC host placed much of the blame on the ones who have been chosen to lead the party in recent years.

"We've time and time again selected people that were amateurs," the MSNBC host said.

Scarborough told "Meet the Press" host David Gregory that he believes there will be major consequences if the GOP does not turn things around soon.

"We've got to figure out a way to move forward together or else you're gonna have Hillary Clinton for two terms... shaping the way our federal governments run," he said. "That will transform government for 50 years."

Scarborough reminisced on when the Republican party "used to be the party to beat," but how the recent government shutdown and other actions taken by the GOP, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), have been based on "dumb tactics."

"Our brand's been battered over the past year and a half and they've been battered by a lot of these people," he said. "Forget their ideology, they're political amateurs."
