David Westin criticized "60 Minutes" and CBS News chairman Jeff Fager on Tuesday over the show's botched Benghazi report.
"60 Minutes" has come under fire for airing an interview with Dylan Davies, a security guard who told the show that he was at the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi on the night it was attacked. Davies, however, had told the FBI that he never reached the compound that night. The show, correspondent Lara Logan and CBS News chairman later apologized for airing Davies' account.
On Tuesday, former ABC News president David Westin weighed in on the question of whether or not the "90-second" or so apology from CBS News was enough. CBS News also failed to disclose that Davies' book about the Benghazi attack was published by CBS' owned publisher Simon & Schuster. The book has now been recalled after the inaccuracies in his testimony emerged.
"CBS made some big mistakes," Westin told HuffPost Live. "I'm sure if Jeff Fager was sitting here right now he'd say they made some big mistakes."
"If they really did know about the contradictory report to his employer, they should have said that in the broadcast," Westin continued. "They clearly should have disclosed the book, I mean that is really the most basic rule in journalism."
Westin told HuffPost Live host Alyona Minkovski that he does not see this story going away anytime soon.
"I will be very surprised if there isn't a lot more reporting on what happened behind the scenes, whether CBS News wants it to come out or not," he said. "This is too good a story to pursue."
