Teen Lachlan Connors: Concussion Turned Me Into Musical Genius

A high schooler from Denver thinks that a series of concussions may have contributed to his impressive musical talents.

According to CBS Denver, Lachlan Connors was not musically minded as a child. However, several years ago he sustained a series of concussions, which sent him to the hospital for weeks and caused him to have epileptic seizures. Connors is now skilled at playing “roughly 10 to 13 instruments," per CBS.

Connors’ doctor also thinks the concussions may have contributed to the teen’s newfound talents.

“The thought is just a theory -- that this was a talent laying latent in his brain and somehow was uncovered by his brain rewiring after the injury,” Dr. Spyridon Papadopoulos told CBS. “Clearly something happened in his brain and his brain had to recover from injury and change happened. And change may have uncovered this ability no one knew he had.”

Connors is not the first to experience this remarkable change. In June 2012, a man named Derek Amato, also from Denver, told TODAY that he thinks he acquired musical talents after sustaining a serious concussion.

While Amato was not a serious musician prior to his injury, he is now a professional piano player.

At the time, Dr. Andrew Reeves of the Mayo Clinic said Amato had "acquired savant syndrome," which is “quite rare.” According to The Atlantic, an acquired savant is "somebody with extraordinary talent but who wasn't born with it and who didn't learn the skills from someplace else later."
