A member of the Gender & Family Project's Parent Group joined HuffPost Live this week to discuss the challenges of raising her 12-year-old son, who identifies as transgender.
"At around age 7, he started switching from saying 'I like boy things' or 'I am a tomboy,' to 'I am a boy,'" Jane recalled. "There was never any question in his mind that this was who he was."
She went on to note, "I definitely felt conflicting feelings at first, and still to this day about parenting in general, not necessarily always related to gender. We wanted to help him, but we also didn't fully understand how we could help him because we live in this binary, too. We didn't really know what to do to help."
"What my goal is...not to erase the past, but be respectful of the way that past is revealed to people who are not part of our immediate circle," she added.
