A 68-year-old man was fatally shot in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood early Thursday during what witnesses tell police was an attempted robbery.

Cayetano Sandoval was gunned down in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue on the city's Northwest Side. WGN reports Sandoval was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest around 1:50 a.m.

Witnesses at a nearby bar told officers that two people tried to rob Sandoval, police said, according to the Sun-Times. One of the robbers reportedly knocked the 68-year-old to the ground while the other shot him. The medical examiner said Sandoval may have been shot as many as five times.

The robbers reportedly ran off after the shooting. DNAinfo Chicago reports police are investigating but have no one in custody yet.
