A Florida couple has been charged with child abuse after allegedly encouraging a teenage relative to smoke pot, drink beer and then drive them around Brevard County.
Rusty Douglas Johnson, 41, and Kim Johnson, 32, were arrested last Thursday and charged with cruelty to a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, NBC Miami reported.
Police say the child, whose name, age and sex has not been released, was in the care of the Johnsons. The couple allegedly gave the victim marijuana on four separate occasions, FloridaToday.com reported.
During one recent two-day drug binge, the youngster supposedly hallucinated, but was still forced behind the wheel of a car, the Orlando Sentinel.
In order to avoid smoking any more pot, the victim contacted another family member who reported the couple to the Rockledge Police Dept. A drug and alcohol screening showed the victim tested positive for cannabis and alcohol.
“It's troubling that relatives would think it's acceptable to provide an underage person the substances they provided them,” Rockledge Police Chief Joesph Lasata told ClickOrlando.com.
The couple was arrested and Kim Johnson was later released on bail. Rusty Johnson is still being held behind bars and also charged with a parole violation.
