The Story Behind Seahawks Fans Phish-Inspired Russell Wilson Chant

How Phish Helped Create A Seahawks' Tradition

A new tradition has developed at CenturyLink Field and Seahawks fans have the band Phish to thank for it.

Seahawks fans have been chanting quarterback Russell Wilson's last name (like this: Wiiiiiiiiiiil-soooooooon!) every time he first steps onto the field in a game. The call is reminiscent of the way fans chant when Phish plays a song called "Wilson" during concerts. Each time the tune is played, the crowd responds to a guitar riff at the beginning by screaming "Wiiiiiiiiiiil-soooooooon." During an April concert in Seattle, Phish's lead guitarist and singer Trey Anastasio suggested that Seahawks fans should do the chant at home games for the team's star quarterback.

Fast forward to the 2013 season, the 12th man embraced the chant and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll likes it. NFL Films even produced a segment on the chant and its back story.
