Nina Dobrev And Ian Somerhalder Joke About Their Breakup At The People's Choice Awards

Nina Dobrev And Ian Somerhalder Poke Fun At Their Breakup

The “People’s Choice Awards” celebrated 40 years with a super awkward moment for two “Vampire Diaries” stars.

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder took home the award for Favorite On-Screen Chemistry for their roles as Damon and Elena on the hit CW show and decided to joke about their real-life breakup while accepting the honor. (The pair ended their three-year romance in May.)

“Wow, this is crazy. Can you believe this is almost five years in the making?" Somerhalder said to the crowd.

“Right, yeah. But you know, I think what’s crazier, though, Ian, is at the beginning of the show, Elena actually hated Damon," Dobrev added, and the funny exchange continued.

“You were hooking up with my brother," Somerhalder said.

"Well, you killed my brother," quipped Dobrev.

“Then eventually she fell in love with me," he boasted.

“And then we started dating on the show," she explained.

"And then we started dating in real life," Somerhalder said, matter of factly.

“And then we broke up in real-life," Dobrev confessed.

“And our characters are still dating on the show," he continued, as Dobrev joked, “It’s a good thing it’s not awkward ... [silence] ... Well, it’s a good thing we have chemistry.”

This isn’t the first time the former couple have poked fun at their on and off-screen relationship -- they also laughed about it at Comic Con back in July.
