49ers vs. Panthers LIVE SCORE UPDATES: Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton Battle In NFL Playoffs

LIVE: 49ers vs. Panthers

Colin Kaepernick believes the San Francisco 49ers owe the Carolina Panthers for what happened when the teams last met. During a regular-season meeting, the Panthers' defense stifled Kaepernick in a narrow 10-9 win. With a berth in the NFC Championship Game on the line, Kaeperick has his chance at payback.

Fresh off a wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers at frigid Lambeau Field, the 49ers travel to Charlotte for another crack at the Panthers. The defending NFC champions were limited to just three field goals in a Week 10 meeting in which both defenses largely contained the two dynamic quarterbacks.

"We owe them," Kaepernick said of the Panthers after the 23-20 wild-card win in Green Bay.

The NFC South champion Panthers limited Kaepernick to just 91 yards passing and 16 yards rushing as they edged the 49ers in San Francisco. The win was the team's fifth in a row in a streak that would eventually stretch to eight games.

"This game is a maturity jump for us, because in the past what I've been a part of, we've been somewhat uncertain of how we will turn out in these types of games," Newton said at the time. "We needed that type of game, just to be in a dog fight, in somewhat of a barnburner, to show what type of team this really is."

Making his first career playoff appearance, Newton will now look to show that he can be a difference maker in the second season. He will likely be aided by wide receiver Steve Smith, who was active for the game despite battling a knee injury.
