Chicago River Deaths: 1 Dead, 1 Missing And Presumed Dead After Fall Into River; Third Person Stable

One man is dead and a woman -- still missing as of Monday morning -- is presumed dead after falling into the Chicago River; a third man who also fell is in stable condition.

The Tribune reports the 26-year-old man fell into the river around 12:05 a.m. Monday when he lunged after the cell phone he dropped along the riverwalk in the 400 block of East Water Street near Lake Shore Drive.

Once in the water, the 21-year-old woman and 23-year-old man who were with him reportedly went into the water to help him. Authorities said the 26-year-old man from St. Paul, Minn. was later pronounced dead at an area hospital while the 23-year-old man was listed in stable condition Monday morning.

Rescue crews were unable to find the woman, who authorities presumed dead Monday morning.

"We continued efforts for over an hour, rotating divers, searched for the final victim, were unsuccessful, and now the scene is turned over to the Chicago police for recovery," Linda Parsons, with the Chicago Fire Department, told ABC Chicago.

A witness described the scene to NBC Chicago:

"I kept talking to him, like who was he with? Was there anybody else with him? He told me he had a friend that he was holding onto and that there was a girlfriend, too, that fell in the water that was under the water but he couldn't find her."

None of the names of the victims were being released Monday morning pending notification of the families.

In December, a 30-year-old Dallas woman died after falling into the river in the 300 block of North Michigan Avenue.
