Destiny Colon, Chicago Teen, Shot While Waiting For Bus To School In Apparent Robbery

Teen Headed To School Shot During Apparent Robbery

A woman and a 17-year-old girl were wounded early morning in separate shootings on Chicago's South Side Monday

Destiny Colon, a senior at Epic Academy, was waiting at a CTA bus stop at 102nd Street and Commercial Avenue around 7:55 a.m. when the shooting occurred. A witness told police the shooter wanted her cell phone, according to ABC Chicago.

Police say Colon was shot in the stomach before she had a chance to respond and was later taken to an area hospital in critical condition, according to CBS Chicago.

A neighbor who spoke to WGN said her husband was coming home at the time of shooting and saw the girl fall to the ground and saw a car speed away through an alley.

Colon was able to speak with police as she was being taken to the hospital but had only a vague description of her shooter.

“Our faith is keeping us and our faith is keeping her," said Rose Polomo, Colon's aunt. "Continue to pray, not only for Destiny, but for the children of this city.”

In a separate incident several hours later, a 21-year-old woman was shot in the 7100 block of South Halsted Street, the Tribune reports. The woman, struck in the thigh and buttocks, was taken in serious condition to an area hospital.
