George Miller To Retire

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) will retire at the end of this year.

Miller made the announcement on his website Monday.

"This is a great institution and I cannot thank my family and my constituents enough for having given me the honor and privilege of representing them in Congress these past 40 years. I have tried to repay them for their confidence by working hard every day to make our country a better place," Miller said in a statement about his retirement. "I’m proud of what I have been able to accomplish on behalf of children, working people and the environment, in my district and for our country, especially passage of national health care reform."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. George Miller, the top Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee, says he will not seek re-election in 2014 after four decades in Congress.

Miller says in a statement on Monday that he looks forward to one final year in Congress "fighting the good fight and then working in new venues on the issues that have inspired me."

Miller was first elected in 1974 in a district in the San Francisco Bay area and has been a leading Democratic party voice on education, labor and health care policy.

He has been a longtime adviser to House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and served on her leadership team while she served as House speaker.
