Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' Debunks Poverty Myths

Bill Nye has tackled everything from God’s existence to creationism to "Dancing With the Stars."

Now, the famed "Science Guy" is using his empirical skills to take on some widespread myths about poverty and health.

In a video posted to YouTube by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nye takes a cue from the chairman of Microsoft. On Tuesday, the Gateses released their annual letter in which the pair addressed a number of misconceptions about poverty, including the popular claim that the U.S. spends an exorbitant amount of money on foreign aid. (It doesn’t.)

In the video, Nye notes that many people think that wars and natural disasters kill more people than anything else. However, he explains such casualties are "dwarfed" by the number of people who succumb to preventable diseases.

Check out the rest of Nye’s myth-debunking in the video above.
