What Congress Looks Like When You Average All Of Their Pictures Together

The 113th Congress is the most diverse in history -- but how diverse is that, really?

Looking at this composite image of the 535 members of Congress created by artist Rebecca Lieberman and developer Matthew Skomarovsky, the answer is clearly "not very." (Indeed, Congress was 82 percent white and 81 percent male in 2013).

The image emerged as a politics-nerd riff off of Lieberman's ongoing body of work, visually similar imgs.

It was created using a Ruby script to manipulate images from the Sunlight Foundation's Congressional Pictorial Directory, which actually contains 813 images.

Skomarovsky noted that he hasn't sorted out which members of congress are missing or duplicated from that set, so the composite isn't exact -- but it's still a pretty telling snapshot.

This image was particularly inspired by Lieberman's "Guys on Blue," which superimposed Google image search results of men on blue backgrounds onto each other:
