When it comes to the importance of mentors, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton lucked out with some great role models to follow.
“For me, it was like I watched a lot of people put their hands in the stove, so I saw what happens and learned,” he shared with us.
“I was never a kid who would follow a friend off the cliff. I realized the importance of watching someone go through something, and doing that intelligently.”
This eventually led Scott to develop his 4th Angel Mentorship Initiative, an organization which pairs patients currently battling cancer with mentors who have overcome the disease. “A 4th angel is someone who has been there and done that and shares how they coped,” Scott said. “It’s not medical advice. It’s just a mentor who you can look at and say, ‘I know how you feel.’”
