This Family Knows What To Do In A Polar Vortex

Move over, Elsa's ice castle. Drs. Shawn and Eileen Trokhan built a gem igloo with their three kids -- Harrison (2.5), Lexi (8) and Abby (6), -- during the polar vortex, IRL.

The children had seen a photo of one made with milk cartons, and fell in love with the idea. So, while some families bemoaned the sub-zero temperatures in Northern New Jersey, this family bought 200 cheap tins from Restaurant Depot, filled them with colored water and enlisted friends to come over and build.

"The girls spent a lot of time choosing the colors for the gems, so they were completely in charge of the color distribution," Shawn explained via e-mail.

At 4.5 feet tall and about 8 feet in outer diameter, the finished product looks like it took much more than the one day it did to complete. Shawn said, "The children participated throughout. It was very much a team effort."

Take that, extreme weather.

Thanks to our friend, blogger Allison Tate, for this one.
