J.C. Penney has had a tough few years of unsuccessfully attempting to transform itself from a place where your mom shops to one in which you might too. Last night during the Super Bowl, it tried again on Twitter. Tried and failed, we should say.
It all started out with a few tweets that made it appear as if whoever was behind J.C. Penney's social medias wasn't exactly sober:
Who kkmew theis was ghiong tob e a baweball ghamle. #lowsscorinh 5_0

Toughdown Seadawks!! Is sSeattle going toa runaway wit h this???
— JCPenney (@jcpenney) February 3, 2014
And then some people noticed:
.@JCPenney We know football goes great with Coors Light, but please tweet responsibly.

LOVING the drunk commentary from @jcpenney. Is this part of the company re-design? #sb48

Turns out whoever was running the department store Twitter account wasn't actually a few beers deep. Just tweeting with mittens?
Oops...Sorry for the typos. We were #TweetingWithMittens. Wasn't it supposed to be colder? Enjoy the game! #GoTeamUSA pic.twitter.com/e8GvnTiEGl

Once sites including BuzzFeed and AdWeek revealed the tweets were simply a stunt, the Internet declared the stunt lame.
.@JCPenney didnt win the #SuperBowlXLVIII on Twitter...if you have to explain your joke, it didnt work. http://t.co/wy5iRV8WZ9

But just FYI, you too can tweet with the SAME EXACT MITTENS.
The mittens that were worn by JCPenney's social media editor are being sold by NBC - pic.twitter.com/BA5eym6U2E
