The Clever Way One Teen Writer Snagged A Book Deal

Want to publish a book but don't know where to start? Just type your query into Google for the answer, obviously -- which is exactly what 13-year-old Jake Marcionette did.

With a little creativity and a lot of persistence, the Ponte Vedra, Fla. teen turned his writing hobby into a book deal when his research led him to cold calling publishers about “Just Jake," a comical story about middle school, based on Marcionette's experiences adjusting to life in a new town while avoiding bullying.

When literary agent Dan Lazar read Marcionette's story, he knew he had to call Jake back. Fast-forward a month later, Marcionette was looking over a contract with his mom.

"I was probably writing more for the kids my age who might read it," Marcionette told CBS News, whose book went on sale today, when asked who he was writing his book for. "Just to have them know that they're not the only ones going through this and you know, it stinks, but it's going to get better."

Jake joins the ranks of other teen authors like 15-year-old Maya Van Wagenen who scored a $300,000 book deal for her memoir, and 16-year-old Disney star Bella Thorne who will be publishing "Autumn Falls," a young adult series.

"I wanted to write a book that teens could relate to, but with a little bit of magic," said Thorne in a press release
