Democrats Running For Governor In Massachusetts Reject Death Penalty For Boston Bomber

All five Democratic gubernatorial candidates in Massachusetts said Thursday they don't think Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should face the death penalty.

State Attorney General Martha Coakley, state Treasurer Steve Grossman, former Department of Homeland Security official Juliette Kayyem, former Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Don Berwick, and former Wellesley selectman Joe Avellone are vying for the Democratic nomination. Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is not seeking reelection. The Democratic primary is scheduled for Sept. 9.

The Justice Department announced last week that it would seek the death penalty for Tsarnaev. The suspect is accused of killing three people and injuring more than 200 others during the Boston Marathon last April.

According to The Washington Post, the federal government has executed just three people since 1964.
