The NFL issued a statement on Sunday night commending Michael Sam, a 2013 first-team All-American defensive lineman from Missouri, who publicly came out as gay just weeks before the league's Scouting Combine.

“We admire Michael Sam’s honesty & courage. Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in NFL."

Michael, 24, is eligible for the 2014 NFL Draft and could become the first openly gay NFL player ever.
