Moral Monday Protest Over Georgia Gun Control Bill Leads To 23 Arrests

Twenty-three people were arrested during a Moral Monday protest over a Georgia gun control bill, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Those arrested faced criminal trespassing charges for refusing to leave the office of state Sen. Jesse Stone (R-Waynesboro), who has declined to act on a Democratic effort to repeal Georgia's controversial “stand your ground” law.

The Moral Monday movement began in North Carolina in 2013, when a group promised to hold weekly protests against the state's GOP-controlled agenda. The movement made it to Georgia in January 2014, when a group protested Republican Gov. Nathan Deal's rejection of Medicaid expansion.

Stone spoke out against the movement in Georgia after Monday's arrests.

"If this is the kind of circus we’re going to have to contend with, we might not be able to do it,” Stone said. “I’m very sympathetic to their concerns, but I can’t reach a good decision just based on the number of people crowding into my office.”
