Darth Vader, Superman Witness Hollywood Smash And Grab (VIDEO)

CAUGHT ON TAPE: Superman, Vader Do Nothing During Crazy Smash-And-Grab

In the comic books, Superman would never ignore a crime in progress.

But out in the real world, a man dressed as Superman -- along with a man dressed as Darth Vader -- looked on as someone shouting "I love Jesus!" smashed the windows of a cop car on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles and appeared to steal a laptop from the vehicle in broad daylight.

It’s not my job to jump in the middle," Superman told KTLA photographer Victor Vargas, who happened to be filming nearby when the incident went down.

Who would've guessed that "up, up and away" was really a cry of retreat?

While Superman turned into Super Chicken and Darth Vader merely looked on, Vargas showed some bravery. He filmed the whole thing as it unfolded across the street from the El Capitan Theatre, where costumed characters often gather to pose for pictures in exchange for tips.

Vargas says in the video that he paused only to call police, then continued to film. He showed nerves of steel when, at one point, the alleged robber appeared to stare him down.

"He looks over at me, and that's where I really got nervous," Vargas says in the video.

But the intrepid journalist kept filming.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is seen on the video being taken down by police on Susan Lucci's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
