Hot Honey: The Ingredient You Need In Your Kitchen

This is one ingredient you should have in your kitchen.

Today we want to talk to you about hot honey. We're not referring to honey that's been warmed, and drizzles so beautifully from your spoon onto a bowl of yogurt (though that's pretty great, too). No, we're talking about spicy honey. That's right, the beautiful (and not so common) combination of sweet, sweet honey and heat from chiles. It exists, and it's a very wonderful thing.

We first came across hot honey at a Brooklyn pizza joint, Paulie Gee's, where they drizzle this concoction right onto their pizza pies. You might not think you want honey on your pizza, but once you try it you'll soon see that it's actually what it has always needed. From there, it's just a matter of time before you start putting it on everything.

There are a few different types of hot honey on the market, but we're most familiar with Mike's Hot Honey (and we are in no way sponsored or affiliated with them). Mike's Hot Honey uses vinegar and chiles to make their spicy honey, and it's great. Negley & Sons' Spicy Honey is another smart choice. They use a blend of seven peppers, and offer a range of hot honeys from mildly spicy to insanely hot. Whichever choice you decide to go with, just make sure you apply it liberally to everything.

Here are just a couple of ideal food pairings for hot honey. Once you get the hang of it, you'll see you add it to just about anything -- even cocktails.

Yes, first and foremost hot honey belongs on pizza. Especially when it's topped with meat.

There's nothing like a little sweetness to bring your breakfast sandwich to the next level. And when that sweet something is spicy too, even better.

Heck, yeah. Can't you just taste it? And not just peaches. Pears, plums and blueberries would also benefit from a drizzle of hot honey.
