'Pretty Little Liars' Goes Film Noir With Black-And-White Episode

Whoa: 'Pretty Little Liars' Goes Film Noir With Black-And-White Episode

Things aren't always black and white in the world of "Pretty Little Liars," but they were this week. After watching an old black-and-white movie, Spencer zonked out in her kitchen and found herself immersed in a black-and-white film noir world of her own. But she wasn't alone there. All the other 'Liars' were present, too.

This was't just a random sidestep into the surreal, either. This vision -- or whatever it was -- helped Spencer figure out that 'A'/Ezra had changed passages of Ali's diary to cover up some facts.

Hollywood Life's Andy Swift was impressed with the work that went into the episode. "Even with its bizarre origins, you have to appreciate how beautifully this thing was filmed," he wrote. "The lighting! The music! The costumes! Everything worked together in perfect harmony to capture the most authentic tribute to old-school noir I’ve seen in a long time.” And he was spot-on. The show hit all 10 of Apex Publication's film noir "cliches that aren't cliches."

"Pretty Little Liars" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC Family.
