GOP Rep: God Is The 'Third Person In Your Marriage'

Minutes after the House passed a bill raising the debt ceiling, Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) led a group of Republican colleagues to the House floor to stress their support for traditional marriage.

Joined by Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), Huelskamp rewinded to pre-Civil War times, stressing how "marriage predates government." He added that the GOP's 1856 party platform warned against the “twin evils of slavery and barbarism,” which he said includes “irregular marriage.”

"It’s just not you and your spouse," Huelskamp said. "There’s a third person in your marriage. And God would like to bless and protect that marriage, and give you many fruitful days ahead.”

Huelskamp has been one of the leading proponents against gay marriage, introducing a constitutional amendment in July to ban the act. His bill was just two sentences long.

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.
