Greg Abbott Portrays Wendy Davis As A Flip-Flopper On Guns And Abortion

Texas Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott (R) released a web ad Wednesday portraying his opponent, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), as a flip-flopping candidate who is not ready to serve as governor.

The ad, titled "Words Matter," splices Davis' past statements on 20-week abortion bans and "open carry" laws with recent media coverage on the nuanced positions she has taken on both issues. In their increasingly acrimonious race, Abbott may be signaling that he will make what he calls her flip-flopping a theme.

Last week, Davis told the Dallas Morning News she could back a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, though the anti-abortion bill she famously filibustered last summer included such a ban, albeit without the kinds of exceptions she said would be necessary.

Earlier this month, the candidate told the Associated Press she would support a proposed "open carry" law. Her support for such a law was met with skepticism from gun rights advocates.

Abbott campaigned on Tuesday with rock musician and activist Ted Nugent. Davis called Abbott's association with Nugent "repulsive" given Nugent's statements on women, President Barack Obama and undocumented immigrants.

“Ted Nugent bothers Wendy Davis because he highlights the way that Wendy Davis has flip-flopped and flipped again on second amendment rights," Abbott said in response.
