Matt Bevin: Marriage Equality Could Lead To Parent-Child Marriage

Kentucky Republican Senate candidate and businessman Matt Bevin suggested in an interview that legalizing same-sex marriage is a slippery slope, and could ultimately lead to legalizing marriage between a parent and his or her child, as Right Wing Watch highlighted Thursday.

Bevin, who is challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the state's Republican primary, made the comments on same-sex marriage Wednesday on "The Janet Mefferd Show. "

"If it’s all right to have same-sex marriages, why not define a marriage -- because at the end of the day a lot of this ends up being taxes and who can visit who in the hospital and there’s other repercussions and things that come with it -- so a person may want to define themselves as being married to one of their children so that they can then in fact pass on certain things to that child financially and otherwise," Bevin said. "Where do you draw the line?"

A federal judge ruled last week that Kentucky must recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Bevin linked McConnell to the judge, though the senator was critical of the ruling.

The Republican primary will be held May 20.

UPDATE -- 8:34 p.m.:

Bevin's campaign spokeswoman, Rachel Semmel, denied that the candidate was suggesting that recognizing same-sex marriages could lead to marriages between parents and their children.

"This is a gross misrepresentation of what Matt said," Semmel wrote in an email Thursday to The Huffington Post. "He sees no comparison between gay marriage and incest. He was discussing the implications of the legal rights related to this issue such as hospital visitations and benefits. To imply otherwise is ridiculous."
