After months of hype and numerous delays, Chris Brown's next album finally has a release date. The performer announced this weekend that his sixth studio album, "X," will hit stores on May 5.

The 24-year-old singer dropped his last album, "Fortune," in 2012. The record hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 but did not reach the sales levels of some of his earlier albums. His most successful releases to date were his first two albums, 2005's "Chris Brown" and 2007's "Exclusive." Both were certified multi-platinum.

Brown took to Twitter to make the "X" announcement, calling the project "my best album yet."

Brown, who assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, has continued to make waves in recent months. He is currently being sued following a physical altercation last fall and has been spending time in a treatment facility.
