Here's How To Actually Enjoy Your Commute

WATCH: Here's How To Actually Enjoy Your Commute

Commutes have a reputation for being a big headache, especially in cities where the journey to and from work has gotten longer and longer.

Tricky travel to the office can cause stress that hovers over you all day, but it's possible for the morning commute to be peaceful or even -- dare we say it? -- fun.

Valerie Alexander, the author of "Happiness... As A Second Language," told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani that she has a secret weapon for the commute blues -- audiobooks of autobiographies read by the author. Finding the thing that takes your mind off the travel is the key, she said.

"If you have this in your car or if you have this on the train or for your commute, you actually want the commute to last a little longer, and then if it does you're not upset about it," Alexander said.

Or you could choose a mode of transportation that gives you more control. Jonathan Maus, the editor and publisher of Bike Portland, said biking to work each morning has not only made it easier to arrive on time, but it's a peaceful trip that he's come to value.

"I actually really enjoy my commute. It's the same time every day. There's never any traffic, and that dependability of the length of the commute is a really big benefit," he said. "I can nail down to about the minute how long it's going to take me to get the four miles from my house to my office, so that's really nice."
