Europe's Lesser Known Seaside Escapes

Spring is, really, still a ways away, but that doesn't mean we're not pumped to plan all of our theoretical summer vacations. Europe's calling--as always--and we want to spend time in quaint villages without all the crowds, if such a thing exists.

Here are seven towns we have our eye on.

Tellaro, Italy
The last village on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Poet, you'll find yummy octopus to eat, hikes to climb and a ship wreck to explore in La Caletta Underwater Archaeological Park.

Banyuls-sur-Mer, France
Very near the border with Spain sits the seaside enclave of Banyuls-Sur-Mer. Here you'll taste delicious sweet wines, enjoy la plage and check out the sweeping views of the Mediterranean.

Kardamili, Greece
Sometimes spelled Kardamyli, this southern Peloponnesian resort comes equipped with olive trees, gardens and beautiful beaches. It's a bit of a schlep from Athens (about 3.5 hours by car) but well worth it.

Getaria, Spain
San Sebastian's lesser-known cousin, Getaria is the birthplace of designer Cristobal Balenciaga (check out the museum while in town). If fashion isn't your thing, spend time in this fishing village drinking the local wine and taking in the old town.

Azenhas do Mar, Portugal
Take a plunge in the cliffside pools of this adorably quaint town. Visitors come here often for the day for delicious food, the fantastic beach and great wine.

Korcula, Croatia
The main town on the island that shares its name has marble streets, beautiful churches and close-enough proximity to Dubrovnik (take the ferry!).

Southwold, England
Located on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, the family-friendly town has a lighthouse, a pier and a killer beach.
