Mayim Bialik Reveals Why She Returned To Acting As An Adult (VIDEO)

WATCH: Why Mayim Bialik Returned To Acting

After starring in the hit '90s sitcom "Blossom," Mayim Bialik took a break from acting to study neuroscience at UCLA. But Bialik returned to television after getting a Ph.D., eventually joining the cast of one of the biggest sitcoms today, "The Big Bang Theory."

During an interview on HuffPost Live, she explained why she came back to acting as an adult. "I actually was running out of health insurance--true story," she admitted to host Ricky Camilleri.

"I had never really acted as an adult," she added. "I assumed no one would hire me for anything."

Bialik re-entered the acting world with small roles on television shows such as "Saving Grace" and "Bones." "After I got my Ph.D, I did -- actually Don Rio, who created "Blossom," he was doing a show called "'Til Death." I played a kind of crazy version of myself on that, and that was kind of fun. So yeah, I just delicately got back in."

"I had never seen "Big Bang Theory" when I was asked to audition. I auditioned with a bunch of other women who were not neuroscientists, and you know, very lucky to get that part obviously."

Bialik plays neuroscientist Dr. Amy Fowler on the hit show. But she said that her Ph.D. didn't help her get the role. "Actors' jobs are to pretend that we are something. You don't have to be it. I'd actually be a very poor actress if I had to be, you know--if I want to play a plumber, I have to go to learn how to be a plumber."
