Jared Leto, Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winner At 86th Annual Academy Awards

03/02/2014 08:44 pm ET | Updated Mar 03, 2014

Jared Leto took home the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 86th annual Academy Awards on Sunday. He was awarded the trophy for his stellar, albeit controversial, performance in "Dallas Buyers Club." Leto plays Rayon, an HIV-positive transgender woman who joins in business with a cowboy named Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey, who was nominated for Best Actor).

Leto topped Barkhad Abdi ("Captain Phillips"), Bradley Cooper ("American Hustle"), Michael Fassbender ("12 Years a Slave") and Jonah Hill ("The Wolf of Wall Street"). Leto was the clear favorite coming into the Oscars. This is his first Oscar win. He won a Golden Globe for the same role back in January.

Leto has received criticism as a cisgender man portraying a transgender woman at a time when transgender actors are slowly gaining more visibility within the entertainment industry. Leto, however, has constantly responded in the best way possible, advocating for actors to explore roles that extend beyond themselves.
