Midlife Crisis Or 'Gaylife' Crisis? A Look At Aging In The LGBT Community

Midlife Crisis...Or 'Gaylife' Crisis?

What makes a gay midlife crisis unique?

That was the question on a number of media experts' minds during a HuffPost Live segment yesterday. Among them was New York Times contributor Steven Petrow, who feels that members of the gay community have more difficulty grappling with age then their heterosexual counterparts.

"There's a real almost fascism about youth and the body culture ... we tend to be childless more, we tend to live alone," he said. "So when it comes to getting to this point in life, we don't always have the same resources available."

Still, aging isn't necessarily a bad thing for many members of the gay community. MISTER founder Carl Sandler pointed to what he described as a recent uptick in the appreciation of "daddies and guys with a little facial scruff."

"I think there are more and more actual opportunities for older guys," Sandler, who's also a Gay Voices blogger, noted.
