Have you fallen down the rabbit hole researching all the different theories on how "True Detective" will end?
Well, you may have been putting too much thought into it.
In a new article from The Daily Beast about the upcoming ending to the season, the creator of "True Detective," Nic Pizzolatto, rejects all of the crazy theories and bluntly says, "The show's not trying to outsmart you."
Plenty of people online have written about the literary references in the show, and whether the serial killer is in fact working alone, or is part of a cult, which many believe Martin Hart, Woody Harrelson's character, is a part of.
Pizzolatto also dismisses this theory.
“I think they’re both actually heroic in the sense that they’re not corrupt men,” said Pizzolatto about Hart and Matthew McConaughey's character, Rust Cohle. “They’re doing their job well. They’re honest cops. There are moments throughout the series where they could let the case go, but they don’t. So they may not be moral exemplars, but I do think they’re heroes."
The big reveal will most likely not be supernatural either, like some have speculated.
"I hope the audience will be pleasantly surprised by the naturalism of the entire story," Pizzolatto said in an interview last week with Entertainment Weekly. "If you look at the series so far, what seems supernatural actually has real-world causes, like Cohle’s hallucinations, or even the nature of the crime. It has occult portents, but there is nothing supernatural about it."
This leaves the Five Horsemen Theory, which as more episodes air, seems more and more likely. This would mean that some of the rich and powerful men of Louisiana are part of a satanic cult, and they are the ones responsible for the murders. Whether that's the case remains to be seen, but it looks like the countless hours some fans have spent on reddit formulating different hypotheses may have been over thinking things.
The finale of "True Detective" airs Sunday March 9 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
