XL Dissent: Why Nearly 400 Students Were Willingly Arrested

Tulane University senior Nick Stracco was one of nearly 400 students to be arrested last week outside of the White House, and he was happy to do so.

Some-1,000 students gathered outside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C. as part of XL Dissent, a large scale protest against the Keystone Pipeline.

"I personally did want to get arrested and the reason that we felt compelled to organize this action as youth is that we're the youngest members of the voting population and we are going to inherit the climate crisis," Stracco explained during a HuffPost Live segment, adding, "The people who elected Obama are telling him exactly what we want him to do and thats to get started on a clean economy today by rejecting Keystone XL."

XL Dissent is part of a larger movement of college students across the country who are asking their schools to divest from fossil fuels.

"The ask of the movement is to leverage the institutions of which we are part of and asking them to stop sponsoring climate change by including fossil fuel companies in their portfolio," Stacco said, "and, to reinvest in the solution."
