Seton Hall Gets Madness Started Early By Stunning No. 3 Villanova With Buzzer Beater (VIDEO)

Buzzer Beater Brings Early Madness To March

Seton Hall kicked off the madness of March days before the NCAA Tournament field is even set. The Pirates knocked No. 3 Villanova out of the Big East Tournament with a stunning buzzer beater.

With his team trailing by one point and just 3.7 seconds remaining in the second half, Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs received an inbounds pass on the right wing and moved to the top of the key. After creating plenty of space with a step-back move, Gibbs drained a fadeaway jumper as time expired to give the Pirates a 64-63 victory in the quarterfinal matchup. The upset was Seton Hall's first win over a top-three team in the program's history, according to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated.

The Wildcats, the No. 1 seed in the Big East tourney, might have seen their chances at snagging one of the No. 1 seeds in the Big Dance vanish thanks to the early exit. While Villanova waits idly for Selection Sunday, unranked Seton Hall will play the winner of the quarterfinals game between Providence and St. John's. The Pirates eliminated Butler in the first round of the Big East tourney, also winning by just one point.
