Kathleen Sebelius Talks With HuffPost Community On Obamacare Deadline Day

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius joined HuffPost Live Monday morning to address the Obamacare enrollment deadline of March 31, and to answer community members' questions about how these new policies will affect them.

Ann of Milwaukee, WI, asked Sebelius what she thought her daughter, a sufferer of a chronic disease that has been costing her $100,000 to $200,000 a year, should do once she graduates from school and her student health insurance expires.

Sebelius explained that, thanks to the new Obama healthcare reform, Ann's daughter need not do anything until she graduates in August and receives employment offers. She can afford to bypass the Obamacare deadline because she qualifies for a "special enrollment period."

"We have in place for her -- and millions of people like your daughter -- the guarantee that whether or not their job comes with coverage, they can't be locked out of the market based on a pre-existing health condition, so this is a brand new day," Sebelius added.
