HuffPost Live recently sat down with a group of individuals to discuss the way that sex education intersects with queer identity -- particularly abstinence-only education in the public school system.
Lauren Marie Fleming, founder of Frisky Feminist Press, was one of those who participated in the round table discussion. Her experiences growing up as a queer person without access to viable sex education resources had profound negative effects on her community.
“I grew up in a town where everyone was having sex and no one was talking about it," Fleming told HuffPost Live. "That’s when I got into sex ed because we were having these ideas of abstinence-only education… I’m queer. I never learned how to protect myself as a queer person having sex. Sexual transmitted infections ran rampant among my queer friends because we just did have any access at all to education.”
